In 2022, the Usher Cup’s annual #10ForTen charity drive secured $10,000 for one of the Gold Coasts not so well-known educational facilities.
Arcadia College, while aligned with the Australian Curriculum, the Queensland Curriculum, assessment authority and the QCAA, is a school which caters for the disengaged, and those struggling with more traditional and often outdated teaching methods.
Last year’s Usher Cup donation secured a much-needed outdoor shaded covering for the school’s students with Acting principal Byron Cracknell saying it had made a huge difference to school life.
“The donations mean so much, not only for us as a school community but also the students, to get them outside and active under a protective shade sail is just perfect.”
For Usher Cup co-founder Wayne Bartholomew, the Robina based college provides the type of care and education that he would have loved as a student, saying their alternate approach to education for youths who have disengaged with mainstream schooling is an academic breakthrough.
“Here we are again at Arcadia College for another round of the Usher Cup 10 for ten charity drive, and we are so stoked through the Usher Cup to be supporting such an amazing educational facility, you know a lot of the kids coming here, they are dealing with quiet high anxiety to start with and by the end of it they are graduating with qualifications and going on to have great careers and we are stoked about that.”
Arcadia College focusses heavily on student well-being, while exposing students to the essential literacy, numeracy and life-skills required for adult life. The college the co-ed College utilises a broad range of educational strategies, including Project-Based and Adventure based learning.
“They have learned the right skills, they are learning how to communicate appropriately and, in any setting, they are being taught self-worth, how to be loved and how to give love, what an incredible way to help a young person find their purpose in life.”
“I am stocked to be here, and we are looking forward to them all coming down to the Usher Cup and all celebrating with us.”
