When it comes to locations for a boardriders club, Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast is about as good as it gets. The beach has been home to the Burleigh Boardriders Club since 1965 the clubs’ riders spoilt for choice with a spectacular point break and beautiful Burleigh Beach.
The Burleigh Boardriders are dedicated to the development of the areas up-and-coming surfers encompassing grommets, cadets, seniors, and masters’ surfers. With seven intra-club events held each year, the clubs’ members
compete in various divisions, all vying for club championship honours.
Protection of the club’s world-class break, and surrounding areas is paramount to the club’s many members who spend time working to protecting the beach and local environment.
During their foundation years, the Burleigh Boardriders would host meetings in the upstairs area of a local milk bar and the club has produced its fair share of champion surfers including brothers Rick and Paul Neilson and Peter Drouyn.
2008 world championship surfer Jay “Bottle” Thompson remains involved in the club and is nurturing the next crop of local stars. Each year the club hosts the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Festival in January, the popular contest requiring all competitors to utilise retro single fin boards (crafted before 1985)
Ironically, money raised from this retro board riding contest is used to support the development of the club’s junior surfers.
