A Snapper Rocks local has claimed the biggest upset of the day to clinch a place in the Usher Cup women’s final.
In fourth position and with only seconds remaining on the clock, Charlotte Mulley launched herself onto the heats final wave, the resulting 7.73 enough to catapult her into first place and Sunday’s decider. Charlotte surprised by the shape and size of the perfectly timed wave.
“I saw it and I was like what, I’m going, and now I’m in the final and I really hope there are good consistent waves because there are some great surfers in the final.”
Charlotte edged out Keely Andrews who also progresses to Sunday’s decider, with Kawana’s Jahly Stokes and Cabarita’s Zahli Kelly eliminated.
In the first semi, North Shelley’s Macy Callaghan beat MNM Boardriders’ Ellie J Brooks, with Sophie McCulloch and Mia Huppatz eliminated.
Macy thrilled to have won through to Sunday’s final. “Yeah, I guess that heat went my way more, a little more than the last few, so I am really happy.”
“I’m excited, I am glad we have a day of rest tomorrow because I am pretty tired, we had a few heats today, but yeah I am really excited.”
Earlier in the day, the quarterfinals pushed the competition to a new level as the waves and competitors seemed to rise to the occasion.
Quarter final 1 saw North Shores Sophie McCulloch take a commanding lead with a 16.70, one of the best scores of the day. McCulloch won through ahead of Macy Callaghan, Raya Campbell, and Grace Kama.
Burleigh’s wildcard entrant Mia Huppatz swooped in and claimed Quarter final 2 with a score of 13.56, knocking out Ellie J Brooks, Kobie Enright, and Sierra Kerr.
North Shore’s Keely Andrews advanced in quarterfinal 3 with a score of 14.76, edging out Jahly Stokes, Brodie Doyle, and Dimity Stoyle, while Cabarita’s Zahli Kelly claimed the last quarter final clash from Charlotte Mulley, Ocea Curtis, and Lucy Callister.
With the women’s final on hold until Sunday, the Usher Cup men’s draw gets underway from 7:30am tomorrow morning following the traditional welcome to country.
Sunday’s Women’s Final will see Macy Callaghan, Charlotte Mulley, Ellie J Brooks and Keely Andrews will battle it out for Usher Cup Women’s champion.
