The first day of the Usher Cup has been run in small competitive waves at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, however the conditions didn’t stop the country’s most exciting females from tearing up the famed break.
Competitors and spectators lined the beach and promenade as the Usher Cup women’s draw got underway, the competition running through to the semi-finals with a number of extremely close heats.
Heat 1 saw Raya Campbell from Snapper Rocks take out the win ahead of Saffi Vette, Keona Pringault and Jessica Bourner.
Snapper Rocks Grace Kama made the most of the home break advantage, claiming heat two ahead of Isla Huppatz, Julia Lennan and Ellia Smith, with WildCard Sierra Kerr too good in heat three, edging out Angela Ball, Phoebe Kane and Leihani Kaloha Zoric with contest Director Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew labelling the exciting Kerr the surfer to watch.
Ellie J Brooks from Mermaid claimed heat 4 from Mia Huppatc, Marie Troja and Taylor Green, while it was another wildcard in Keely Andrews who hit the waves and dominated the scoreboard to claim heat 5 ahead of Jahly Stokes, Roxy Cameron and Keely Andrews.
Dimity Style, Wildcard, DJ and surf extraordinaire took heat 6 under her belt against Sai Maniwa, Ichigo Nishimura and Shaye Leewundal.
The days wildcard theme continued in heat 7 when Ocea Curtis shocked the crowd with an outstanding performance in challenging conditions to claim the session against Ashley spence, Liana Walsh and Piper Harrison.
Heat 8 saw wildcard Charlotte Mulley take home the win against Lucy Callister, Uraro Saito and Luna Piazza, setting the scene for the afternoons quarter and semi finals.
